FOREWORD
TAFISA World 2001 - The Global Almanac on Sport for All is a result of the first globally conducted survey on Sport for All organizations around the world. This is also a legacy of the late Prof. Masaru lkeda who passed away on October 27th, 2000.

Twice in the past, Sasakawa Sports Foundation (SSF) has conducted a similar survey in the Asia and Oceania region under the supervision of the late Prof. Ikeda and published each reports in 1997 and 2000. These initiatives caught the attention of TAFISA President Dr. Jurgen Palm who proceeded to ask SSF to conduct the survey globally. With great honor, I directed the project to be undertaken immediately.

The survey was sent to TAFISA member organizations and other international and national bodies dedicated to Sport for All. Consequently, this Almanac contains 79 organizations in 65 countries and regions.

Dr. Yasuo Yamaguchi who succeeded the late Prof. Ikeda as the supervisor of the Almanac, has been recently appointed as a director of TAFISA-JAPAN and is now considered to be a leader of Sport for All in Japan.

I am particularly pleased to present this project along with another great initiative Worldwide Experiences and Trends in Sport for All, edited by Dr. Lamartine P. DaCosta and Ms. Ana Miragaya at the 17th International TAFISA Congress at Cape Town in October, 2001. When read together, readers will gain rich understanding about the cultural diversity and issues surrounding the current Sport for All movement.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who have contributed to make this project possible. I hope this book will bring everyone closer together for our common goal, Greater Happiness through Sport for All.
