"Hold should be lime washed or coated with paint which has equivalent function to prevent corrosion of structure due to salt on tank tops, hoppers, side shells and bulkhead plates which cargo contact with."

Reason: Means for protection of cargo holds from corrosion other than lime coating are utilized and there is no reason to prohibit such means.

(97) Re: CLEAN UP: The sentence should be read as follows:

"Pure urea does not corrode steel but in water solution strip some kinds (e.g., rubber chloride) of paintwork. Impure urea with ammonium may corrode steel structure and in water solution strip some kinds of paintwork. Sweep, hose out and dry holds."

Reason: In general, urea carried in bulk contains impurities and the corrosions of structure and paint have been reported.

"Hatches should be sealed, if necessary. Shut all vents and access ways. DO NOT pump bilges in cement hold without special precaution, because pumping of water containing cement may cause malfunction of the pumping system."

Reason: Japanese shipping companies have long experience of the carriage of these cargoes. Sealing of cargo hold is necessary in general but not always.

Reason: Editorial. These cargoes constitute low fire risk and installation of a fixed fire-extinguishing system is not required (c.f. MSC/Circ.671 Table 1).

(101) Re: Fixed fire extinguishing system in EmS

In accordance with the existing EmS - B9, a fixed fire-extinguishing system should be used in a fire situation. On the other hand, this cargo is regarded as a low fire risk cargo and fixed gas fire-extinguishing system is not required. For this cargo, water should not be used. Therefore, the sentence in the EmS for this cargo should be changed as follows:

"Batten down; use ship's fixed fire-fighting installation, if available.

Exclusion of air may be sufficient to control the fire. Do not use water."
