4 Liquefaction Potential Tests
4.1 Liquefaction Potential Tests by Japan
Japan carried out the Liquefaction Potential Tests based on the test procedure described in DSC 2/12/1. The outline of the procedure are as follows, briefly:
(1) Prior to the test, density of solid part of the sample is measured. The weight of empty mould (lower vessel) is measured;
(2) The dry sample is inserted into the mould and compacted, in five layers. The numbers of dropping of compaction hammer (350 g, 0.2 m) for five layers are 42, 42, 43, 43 and 43 times, respectively, because the volume of specimen is 1,700 cm3;
(3) The air in the mould is removed by vacuum pump;
(4) The water is supplied into the mould;
Note: Through these steps, the void of the sample is filled with water. In other words, the sample becomes saturated.
(5) The lid of the mould and the extension collar (upper cylinder) are dismounted and the sample is leveled along the brim of the mould (lower vessel);
Note: Through these steps, the saturated specimen is obtained.
(6) The weight of the mould is measured and the weight of the specimen is calculated;
(7) Water in the specimen is drained through the small hole, of which the diameter is 3.1 mm, for thirty minutes;
(8) The weight of the mould after drainage is measured and the weight of the sample is calculated; and
(9) Moisture content of the sample after drainage is measured and degree of saturation before and after drainage are calculated.
The results of the tests are given in Table 8.
