To handle this actual status, it is needed to concentrate on the developing rapidly the mass transit in urban area on the base of regular and modern direction to facilitate daily travel demand as well as to prevent traffic congestion, pollution and traffic accidents in urban transport. In recent years, the MOT and the City People's Committee have had the guidelines and policies for the study to prepare for development projects in this area.
The City Transport and Urban Public Works Service has carried out the formulation of planning on mass transit development such as planning on urban rail-wheel transport up to 2020 and beyond 2020, the planning on public passenger transport by bus up to 2010 implemented by the TEDI South. The MOT has given its direct assistance and guidance to the Pre-Feasibility Study on two metro lines in the support of TU Dresden University, the collaborator of the TEDI South.
In this Seminar, the participants have agreed to appreciate the public transport of HCMC must be considered the highly prioritized area for development in the coming years. The Seminar has also agreed with the analysis and the conclusion that with the population of more than 5 millions at present and 9-10 millions in foreseeable future HCMC needs a powerful mass transit system. It includes the modern metro line integrated closely with regular bus routes to establish convenient, comfortable and rational public transport network to facilitate daily travel of people.
The result of this Seminar clearly has identified the existing difficulties of urban transport in HCMC. It has also presented the experiences in terms of handling measures of international urban areas, especially the experiences of Japan. In addition, the Seminar has generalized the next expectations for public transport development encompassing bus routes and particularly metro system in urban area.
We think that this Seminar is very useful for the preparation of the feasibility study on the first metro lines in HCMC. The City has supported the efforts in cooperation between the TEDI South and JTCA to hold this Seminar and to prepare for the follow up activities. We hope that Japanese Government as well as Japanese experts and companies will give further precious assistance and close cooperation to HCMC to implement mass transit projects in HCMC, especially the project on metro lines in urban area.
