As regarding to the current traffic situation in urban area, some 22 sections contain traffic density of more than 15,000 persons/hour-way, 10,000-15,000 and 5,000-10,000 persons/hour-way for 35 sections and more than 82 sections respectively. (In terms of theory and practice, in many cities in the world the routes with traffic density of more than 15,000 persons/hour-way need the construction of inner-city railway line). While in HCMC, a lot of routes have reached more than 15,000 persons/hour-way; therefore this requires the city to come up with an effective solution in the future.
The above is the specific and typical situation ad figures and they indicate that the requirement of urban transport improvement and development is great at present. The improvement, upgrade and construction of the important facilities that will make the contribution into enhancement of capacity of urban transport and be considered the premise for future development is one of the urgent and objective requirements of HCMC.
Over the past years, HCMC has been supported by the Central Government as well as by a lot of international organizations in coordination with related organs to study the transport development projects as follows:
Transport study made by MVA consulting agency and completed by the end of 1998-at the beginning of 1999 funded by the ODA source of United Kingdom Government. It is a good study to be the basis for the next projects.
The Study on the tunnel going through Saigon river of Maunsell consulting agency funded by ODA source of United Kingdom Government. The result of this study has been used for the on-going project on the construction of East-West Boulevard.
Pre-feasibility study on intra-HCMC rail transport system was conducted by the Professors of TU Dresden University and completed by the end of 1997 funded by Sachsen State of German. It is a feasibility study to form the basis for the projects on development of intra-HCMC railway system in the following time.
The study on single used bus route from Ben Thanh market to Binh Tay market made by Semmary private consulting agency and completed by 1998 and funded by Lyon city of France on the occasion of the anniversary of 300 years of the city. It is a good project for reference to select public passenger transport mode.
Study on public passenger transport corridors by buses of RATP of France completed by the end of 1999. Through this study, the city can find out the investment abilities for public passenger transport by buses to construct inner-city railway system in the future.
