In respect of individual countries, the company's largest market is in Italy followed by India, with the latter largely relating to land-based products. The third single biggest market is in South Korea, worth EUR 63m, and the fourth largest is in Japan, worth EUR 52m.

In terms of orders, the intake for medium-speed marine engines in 1999 was 2,894MW, a record level for the company. An additional 2.769MW was for delivery by licensees. Orders were said to have been boosted by significant growth in the cruise and passenger-cargo markets.

By August 2000 the number of people employed by the company had risen from the figure of 8,472 shown in the above table for 1999 to 9,250. This was as a result of adding in the personnel previously employed by Cummins Wartsila (see Section 2.2) and who were transferred to Wartsila Power Divisions. Of these 2,145 are based in Finland, 1,400 in Italy, 830 in France, 820 in the Netherlands, 600 in India, 450 in Norway and 400 in Switzerland, with the remainder spread throughout the world.

1.3 Operating Costs and Procurement Strategy
