EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The coming together of Wartsila and New Sulzer Diesel marked the marriage of two very different approaches. As well as being a leading engine designer, Wartsila had opted to manufacture its engines itself and not to grant any licenses to other manufacturers. NSD on the other hand manufactured very little itself, with the vast majority of its engines made by licensees. As well as differing philosophies this also reflected the practicalities of constructing Sulzer engines. Their low-speed designs, mainly for use in tankers and other very large vessels, are more suited to construction on-site and therefore by a licensee.
