Prior to its acquisition by Rolls-Royce, Vickers Ulstein Marine Systems was organised into four principal operating units which were as follows:

 

Engines - employed 749 people and had a turnover (1998) of £75.7m (Yen 12,869m).

 

Propulsion - employed 2,486 people and had a turnover (1998) of £302.3m (Yen 51,391m).

 

Deck Machinery - employed 1,283 people and had a turnover (1998) of £128.3m (Yen 21,811m).

 

Marine Technology and Global Support - employed 297 people and had a turnover (1998) of £111.6m (Yen 18,972m).

 

Rolls-Royce

In 1999 the total turnover of Rolls-Royce Group was more than £4.7 billion (Yen 692 billion). Between 1998 and 1999 Rolls-Royce enjoyed significant growth, matched by a rise in profits.

Industry commentators believe that Rolls-Royce will be looking to shed around 5,000 jobs over the next three years in response to lack of sales growth. It would appear however that this largely reflects a sluggish performance in some of the non-marine parts of the group.
