EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The company was founded in 1866 as an ordnance depot (for weapons/ammunition storage) and is based in Kiel in northern Germany. It started to develop and produce diesel engines in 1922. Today it has a turnover of $300 million (Yen 31,500 million) and employs around 1,500 people.
Between 1964-96 MaK was a member of the Krupp Group, but on 1 January 1997 was acquired by the US company Caterpillar Inc., the world's biggest manufacturer of construction and mining machinery, diesel and gas engines and stationary gas turbines. The purchase of MaK enabled Caterpillar to extend the upper end of its reciprocating engine product line from maximum ratings of about 5MW to 16MW, as well as bringing know-how in heavy fuel technology and giving the group a foothold in the marine market.
