Mitsui-MAN B&W 8S60MC-C Engine
The production of Mitsui-MAN B&W 8S60MC-C was completed in June 1998 in Tamano Works of Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. (MES)
The S60MC-C engine type is one of the S-MC-C series, which have been introduced in addition to the MC program, and it is the third developed after the production of S50MC-C and S46MC-C type engines in MES.
The engine was successfully tested in Tamano works and the Type Approval Test as the first S60MC-C in the world was carried out in the presence of the representatives from classification societies.
Design features of S60MC-C engine
a) Compact and High power ratio
Compared with the S-MC engines, the S-MC-C engines are designed to produce 10% more power, while the size of the engine body has become more compact (about 10% weight reduction). Power up has been achieved by about 5% increase in the mean effective pressure from 18 bar to 19 bar, and by about 5% increase in the mean piston speed.
b) Satisfactory engine performance
The first 8S60MC-C engine was equipped with 1x MitsuiMAN NA70 /TO9 turbocharger. The satisfactory engine performance under all engine operation conditions was achieved as shown in the graph.
Furthermore, the measured NOx emission could fulfill the requirement of IMO MARPOL 73 / 78 Annex VI with standard atomizer.
c) High reliability
In order to secure the reliability of the engine against the high power ratio of the S-MC-C series, the engine construction has been thoroughly reviewed and various new designs have been introduced.
Stay Bolt Design
The stay bolt tightens the main construction of the engine such as the bed plate, the frame box and cylinder frame.
The conventional stay bolt goes from the bottom of the bed plate to the top of the cylinder frame, while the new design of -MC-C goes from the top of the bed plate to the top of the cylinder frame. Thus, the bed plate does not get the tightening force, and therefore, the main bearing housing does not become deformed by the tightening force. This contributes to improvement in the working condition of the main bearing. Further, the conventional stay bolt was going through a hole, and therefore, it was not exposed inside the crank case. The new stay bolts are arranged with 2 pieces on each side, and they are exposed inside the crankcase. This contributes to simplifying the construction and decreasing the weight of the engine.
Prospects
The number of orders for the S60MC-C engines has increased to 12 as of October 2000, and the total number of orders for S-MC-C engines is over 80.
The longest service experience of over 12,000 hours has confirmed t he 8S60MC-C engine is being operated with a satisfactory condition.
Good customer satisfaction from the SMC-C series of engines is expected.
