P&O NEDLLOYD KOWLOON 6,690-TEU Container Ship

P&O NEDLLOYD KOWLOON, post Panamax size container ship, is the last of the four vessels built at IHI Kure Shipyard order for which was placed with IHI in 1996 originally by P&O Containers (U.K.), which later merged with Nedlloyd Line (Netherlands) and became P&O Nedlloyd. The concepts incorporated in the design and construction of these vessels were the outcome of joint study by the owner and shipyard toward new generation container ships. Continuous growth of marine transportation has pushed up the container fleet capacity and individual ship size, and this series of vessels help maintain the leading position. With 42.8 m beam, she can load containers, 15-row abreast and 9 tiers in the cargo holds, 17-row abreast and 6-tiers high on deck, totaling 6,690 TEUs.

Features

1. DU-Sulzer RTA96C type diesel engine is a recently developed high powered engine focusing mainly on ultra large container ships. Its 960 mm bore, 2,500 mm stroke cylinder delivers 5,490 kW (7,460 PS) output.

2. To maximize the container intake in the cargo holds, 3-row pontoon type hatch covers are placed on no-longitudinal girder hatch openings (the largest for container ship ever built) as a result of precise analysis of longitudinal and torsional strength and deformation of hull structure in various wave conditions. High ten-sile strength steel plate with thickness up to 65 mm is used for main hull strength members.

3. Lasting bridges are provided on deck to enable the containers be stacked up as high as 6 tiers. Containers on third and fourth tiers are secured by lashing rods supported on the lashing bridges. They can also support 45' long containers directly on their top surface, thus contributing to adaptability of the ship in case of substantial increase in 45' containers.

4. Total of 710 sets of self contained air-cooled reefer containers (20' or 40') can be loaded.

5. The electric generating plant consists of: -4 -Diesel generators 3,600 kW, 1- Shaft generator 3,500 kW and 1- Emergency D.G. 300 kW. To supply the required electric load for 710 sets of reefer containers and high powered main engine with relating auxiliaries, a large plant totaling 17.9 MW installed. Because of large current expected, breakers with 440 V distribution are not available and high voltage distribution of 6.6 KVA is adopted.

6. Automation and central monitoring system is employed for almost all data on the ship, ranging from tank levels to monitoring of machinery in operation.

The system consists of dual server computers and dual network and is always scanning approximately 3,000 monitoring signals.
