SUNFLOWER TOMAKOMAI and HOKKAIDO MARU are the fast RORO vessels, and recorded a maximum speed 31 knots. SUNFLOWER TOMAKOMAI was delivered to Blue Highway Line Corp. /Corporation for Advanced Transport & Technology on August 12, 1999 and HOKKAIDO MARU to Kawasaki Kinkai Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. on August 29, 1999 at Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
SUNFLOWER TOMAKOMAI and HOKKAIDO MARU entered service in September, 1999 on the 1,037 km Japanese domestic route between Tokyo and Tomakomai in Hokkaido.
The vessels have 30 knots service speed, and it takes only 20 hours, while the existing RORO vessels need 30 hours, so that the can realize "daily service" between Tokyo and Tomakomai. The are expected to be the pioneers of the "modal-shift" (shifting transportation from land vehicles to vessels).
