II Oceanographic Surveys and Provision of Information to Ensure Navigational Safety
1. Oceanographic Surveys to Ensure Navigational Safety
JCG carries out oceanographic surveys to ensure navigational safety, collates the results and issues them as hydrographic charts and publications as well as providing them in the form of maritime traffic safety information and other media.
2. Provision of Information to Ensure Navigational Safety
As well as publishing hydrographic publications indispensable for ensuring navigational safety, JCG produces maritime traffic safety information and information on ocean currents in order to provide data for keeping hydrographic publications up to date and information which needs urgent dissemination.
Information necessary for the safety of navigational traffic is provided through the Internet or publications as Notices to Mariners, Regional Notices to Mariners, and through Internet, fax, radio telephone, radio telegraph and LED display in the form of Japan Navigational Warnings, Regional Navigational Warnings, Departmental Navigational Warnings, Sea Traffic Information and NAVAREA XI and NAVTEX Navigation Warnings, which are provided by the Global Navigational Warning System.
III Management and Provision of Oceanographic Information
In 1965, JCG established the Oceanographic Documentation Center, which later became the Japan Oceanographic Data Center, in response to the resolution of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Committee and the Government Ocean Science and Technology Council (later the Government Council on Ocean Development).
