Chapter 6 Response to Natural Disasters

1. Response to Natural Disasters

In preparation for natural disasters, maritime accidents, other accidents and incidents, JCG maintains a 24-hour watch system and deploys patrol vessels and craft and aircraft. In the event of disaster, JCG ensures a system of emergency measures, including immediate damage status surveys and rescue activities by operational patrol vessels, craft and aircraft, and the establishment of an ad-hoc countermeasure headquarters.

2. Surveys on Disaster Prevention

(1) Research on Earthquakes

JCG is carrying out research on earthquake prediction by participating in the Earthquake Prediction Research Program from the outset and utilizing advanced seabed survey technologies and geogravity, geomagnetic and deep-sea earth crust movement survey capabilities and other techniques developed in its hydrographic activities.

(2) Participation in the Volcano Eruption Prediction Program

JCG has been participating in the volcano eruption prediction program and maintaining fundamental data on sea floor volcanoes by conducting aircraft observations of volcanic activity in the sea areas off the Southern Islands and the Southwest Islands and aero-magnetic surveys for investigating the underground structure of sea floor volcanoes, as well as carrying out sea floor topography investigations with 'MAMBO II,' for example, which is able to perform unmanned surveys.
