Abstract

The fast development of new engines and the requirements like investment cost reduction and low running cost lead to modification in the concept of lube oil filtration.

Filter efficiency must be improved. The filter equipment needs to reach maintenance intervals which are the same as the main overhaul intervals of today's engines. The solution has to be more integrated and simple without losing its reliability and efficiency. The equipment and the system proposal will be introduced and some ofthe experience reported.

1. The lube oil automatic filters play a major role to protect bearings ' Turbochargerbearings and hydraulic components of new engine designs. There are four main features of the filters which have to be evaluated:

・Filtration efficiency

max. particle size which can pass and the percentage of solids retained

・fatigue strength of the filter elements

・backflushing efficiency

・redundancy

The types of lube oil filters in use on Diesel engines vary with the type, size of engine and fuel which is used. Until today apart from some exceptions high speed engines (above 1000 rpm) use paper cartridges as batteries of spin-on-filters or duplex filters with paper elements. The high speed Diesel engines have a demand of very fine filtration because of the small bearing clearance and the high revolutions. A twenty micron filtration by paper elements is mostly required. To define just 20 micron is not sufficient. A test method like ISO Standard 4572 offers the engine manufactures an objective quality comparison. Besides the filter, the engines have a centrifugal filter for the soot removal. The paper filter itself can only remove a minor amount.
