2. SC11 Programe of work

Not settled yet, the SC11 being new established.

In order to start the works and to set out the programme of work of Subcommittee 11 the Participant Members have been asked to send theirs possible suggestions and proposals.

Also, the Directorate General VII - TRANSPORT of the European Commission, was asked to send available working documents in the special field of TCS/SC11, and some documents have already been received from them, they being a source of information about the level reached in the EC in SSS knowledge /study /research /application within the member countries and the ancillary hydrographical basin.

Also, due to the kindness of Mr. S.C. Schade a contact with CEN TC300 "Sea - Going Vessels and Marine Technology", was established in view of exchanging information and avoiding the doubling or parallelism of some works.

Obviously, for the European Zone, Intermodal & Short Sea Shipping represent a true perspective for relieving the road traffic and/or implementing the system.

From the documents received from DG VII - EC can be observed some of progresses made in the process of harmonization of loading units in the field of intermodality and intermodal freight transport in EU, as follows:

1. A study (ITU-NORM), co-ordinated by the "Burreau International des Conteneurs" (BIC), has been initiated. The aim is to make an-depth analysis of the current inefficiencies related to the harmonisation of loading units and to issue recommendations for a standard for intermodal loading units which allows for smooth transfer between modes.

2. Close co-ordination with CEN (Comite Europeen de Normalisation), the main European standardisation organisation, and with the different industry stakeholders has been established.

3. In recent years a need has emerged to examine the development of a small-standardised container, the so-called logistics box. In response, the COST 339-Action has been launched with a view to looking at the feasibility of developing such a small container.
