take on the responsibility for the revision work of the two standards. In particular the responsible SC should resolve the differences between the European and the US views regarding the symbol definition. This should be resolved before any activity of converting the symbols into computer readable and transmittable format takes place.
Further the convenor is of the opinion that the WG2 task should be reassigned as continuing down the present path (with him as convenor) will not result in a document in the near term.
- WG3 General principles for the development of programmable electronic systems in marine applications
Present Stage: 20.60
As previously reported formal discussions have taken place between SC10/WG3 and IEC/TC18/WG16 regarding the nature of liaison between the Working Groups. SC 10is in general positive to the proposed approach, notwithstanding the project character, and will accept that a Joint Working Group is established under the leadership of SC10.
To date no formal request has been received from the Secretariat of IEC/TC18 on the matter.
WG3 will continue the work as a SC10 project in accordance with the new target dates proposed by the Convenor.
- WG4 Shipboard loading instrument
Present Stage: 20.20
Mr. Spencer Schilling accepted the convenorship of WG4 Shipboard Loading instrument under the assumption that IMO, and thereby IACS, would support the ISO project. Shortly after the convenorship was accepted he informed the SC10 Secretariat that he was quite discouraged to find out that:
a) No IMO support existed for this work, and
b) IACS members had no intention of using any standard once it was developed
c) A new ISO Standard would not be "a consolidating Standard", which is the type of standard needed.
Based on this Mr. Schilling found it difficult to justify an investment in a significant amount of time for the project, which would only result in another independent standard to comply with.
Despite the views of Mr. Schilling the project shall continue within the ISO/TC8/SC10-work programme.
Mr. H. J. Koelman (Holland) is replacing Mr. Schilling as convenor of WG4.
- WG5 Product structure directory standard for ships.
Present Stage: 20.20
