1. OPENING OF THE MEETING (9.00 hrs)

The Chairman opened the meeting with the traditional blowing of the boatswain's pipe.
To begin the Chairman explained about the change of the intention, purpose and size of the AG.
The main purpose of the AG at the time is to provide advice and assistance to the Chairman and Secretariat regarding the Strategic vision, Planning issues such as long range plan, Business Plan, and short range plan, Public awareness such as public information, Program management overseeing in that we will assist in what TC8/Sub committees are not progressing, and what moves and adjustments are necessary.
The AG group does not require a delegate from every country.
The member of the AG group is the member of the AG group and if that person cannot attend the AG meeting, there is no substitute. Because the work carried out by the advisory group is to handle above matters that could not be handled by correspondence only.
The listing of the AG members have been reduced to a very small number compared with the past. The fundamental matter is, if the group is to provide advice and assistance, the members must attend the AG meeting, if the member does not appear, the member should be dropped from the listing. Also the members of the AG should not take offense and should have a direct assistance to the Chairman.
The minutes and paperwork generated in the AG is the AG group correspondence and will be sent_only to AG group members in terms of efficiency.
In addition to the AG members, the Chairman continues to request the attendance of the subcommittee Chairmen and the Secretariats either one or both, who are not members of the AG, but are expected to be attend, because of its importance. There are no Liaisons to the AG. Mr. Miguel Palomares of IMO is the special adviser to the Chairman, because our Strategic vision requires a very close linkage with IMO. The work with IMO is fundamental to the achievement of TC8's work.
The Chairman introduced Professor Jeong J. Kim, Korean Republic, his first time attendance of the AG meeting. Professor Kim delivered his speech on the present difficult condition of International standardization work in Korea, but hopes to continue to participate in next year's AG meeting. The Chairman suggested to provide Mr. Kim any information, such as the Newsletter, 8N1000 and so on that might be of interest to Korea.
