財団設立からの経過
昭和38年9月
財団法人 日本船舶振興会は、モーターボート競走の収益を世のため人のために生かすための事業として、海事科学の普及を目的とした博物館建設の基本方針を決定。
昭和40年4月
海事博物館(仮称)建設事業計画を策定、運輸大臣の詔可を得る。
昭和42年4月
財団法人 日本船舶振興会は博物館事業の実施、運営団体として財団法人 日本海事科学振興財団を設立。
昭和43年3月
博物館の名称を「船の科学館」と定め、建設用地を、東京港13号その1埋立地に内定、建設事業計画作成を実施。
昭和45年12月
建築工事に着手。
昭和46年11月
展示場工事に着手。
昭和49年7月
「船の科学館」一般公開。海の記念日に海事全般にわたる総合的、近代的科学館として公開。
昭和53年7月
“宇宙−人類の夢と希望”のテーマのもとに、船の科学館を中心に宇宙科学博覧会開催、551万人余の見学者を迎える(期間：53.7.16〜54.1.15)
昭和54年3月
国際児童年に協賛し、宇宙博再開。

昭和54年5月
船の科学館施設として元南極観測船“宗谷”一般公開。
昭和55年7月
二式大型飛行艇一般公開。
昭和60年6月
3階展示場改装。
昭和61年12月

6階展示場改装。元青函連絡船“羊蹄丸”取得。
平成元年3月
「マリンシアター」一般公開。地階展示場改装。

イタリア・ジェノヴァ市で開催された「国際船と海の博覧会」に日本政府館として羊蹄丸出展。

History of the Museum
Sep. 1963
The Japan Shipbuilding Industry Foundation announced its plan to construct a museum, funded through the profits from motorboat racing, to promote marine sciences, an undertaking that would benefit both society and individuals.
Apr. 1965
A plan for the construction of the Maritime Museum (tentative name) was set, and approval was obtained from the Minister of Transport.
Apr. 1967
The Japan Shipbuilding Industry Foundation established the Japanese Foundation for the Promotion of Maritime science administer and oversee the construction of the museum.
Mar. 1968
The Museum of Maritime Science was chosen as the name. Landfill 13-1 of Tokyo Bay was tentatively selected as the museum site, and plans were made for construction.
Dec. 1970
Construction began.
Nov. 1971
Construction of exhibit halls began.
Jul. 1974
The Museum of Maritime Science was opened to the public on Marine Day as a comprehensive and modern science museum dealing with all maritime matters.
Jul. 1978
A science exhibit entitled Space: the Hopes and Dreams of Humanity was opened at the Museum of Maritime Science, attracting over 5.51 million visitors during its showing from July 16, 1978, through January 15, 1979.
Mar. 1979
From March 24, 1979, through September 2, 1979, a space science exhibit was again shown to help celebrate the International Year of the Child.
May. 1979
Soya, the former Antarctic observatory ship, was opened to the public as one of the permanent exhibits of the Museum of Maritime Science.
Jul. 1980
A type2 Flying Boat was made accessible to the public.
Jun. 1985
The third-floor exhibition area was remodeled.
Dec. 1986
The second-floor exhibition area was remodeled.
Dec. 1987
The first-floor exhibition area was remodeled.
Jul. 1988
The sixth-floor exhibition area was remodeled. The former Aomori-Hakodate Ferry, Yotei-maru, was acquired.
Mar. 1989
The Marine Theater was opened to the public. The basement-floor exhibition area was remodeled.
Mar. 1992
Q&A Theater was opened to the public.
May 1992
The Yotei-maru was sent as an exhibit from Japan to the International Ships and the Sea Exhibition, held in Genoa, Italy, from May 15, 1992, through August 15, 1992.
Mar. 1996
The Yotei-maru Floating Pavilion was opened to the public.
July. 1997
The Japanese Boat Pavilion and the Maritime Saloon were opened to the public.
