Chronology-the 1950s

 

・ 1953-Submerged Lands Act

- Grants title to states to the submerged lands natural resources located within 3 statute miles of coastline, including "right and power to manage, lease, develop and use them" (reversing the 1947 Supreme Court ruling)

 

・ 1953-Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act

- Establishes jurisdiction of the Federal government over subsoil and seabed on the outer continental shelf seaward of state boundaries

Chronology-the 1950s

 

・ 1958-First Law of Sea Conference, Geneva

- Drafts four conventions dealing with high seas, territorial sea and contiguous zone, fisheries, and the continental shelf;

- No agreement on width of territorial sea

 

・ 1959-Federal Council for Science and Technology

- President Eisenhower establishes Council to: (1) enhance science and technology planning; (2) foster cooperation among Federal agencies; and (3) advise President regarding Federal programs that affect multiple agencies
