Hence we have to find a way to continue speech in high tone.

First of all, we have to consider the amount of air, the basis of our esophageal speech. The breathing capacity of the lungs for the able body is ranging from 3,000 cc to 3,500 cc whereas the esophageal air capacity used for the esophageal speech is said to be 120 cc to 150 cc.

There is an absolute difference in the amount of the air used for speech. In other words, the laryngectomees are forced to speak with one twentieth of the air non-laryngectomees use and this inevitably requires a certain means in order to talk with other people.

This explains why it is necessary for us to refill a little amount of air many times to continue our speech while other people speak in one breath. It also explains that not to speak long in one breath leads to higher tone of voice.
