4. Oral Whispering
Some people make sounds such as "kya," "kyu" and "kyo" by using air collected in the mouth and firmly pressing the back half of the tongue against the back wall of the throat. Listening will readily reveal such sounds as completely different in tone from those produced through authentic esophageal speech.
This undesirable habit is toward oral whispering, and is one of the worst problems in voice production faced by instructors of esophageal speech.
Causes:
(1) Oral whispering is often observed in people who have taught themselves to speak using a manual on esophageal speech. Occasionally, some people who are self-taught become proficient in this speech, but they are, however, in the minority.
Self-taught people do not understand the progress of their training and may continue to have an irritated feeling. They mistake their now easy-to-produce speech as basic sounds obtained through proper esophageal speech, and this becomes a habit with them.
(2) Even though they have not yet firmly established the basics, they strain the lower part of the throat from the start and narrow it.
