21. NEXT SLIDE Port of Los Angeles

Since 1990, the volume of containers passing through the Port of Los Angeles has increased by more than 60% to 3.4 million TEUs in 1998. The Port built a 260-acre terminal for American President Lines at pier 300 that cost 270 million dollars and has 50-foot water depths and on-dock rail. The Port is also currently constructing Pier 400 for a terminal that will occupy more than 300 acres for containers plus other operations. The Port provides near-dock rail for both Evergreen Marine Ltd. and Yusen Terminals at its Terminal Island Transfer Facility. This 26 million dollar facility was opened in 1998 and has 9000 foot of loading track to accommodate four unit trains. The Port of Los Angeles is also constructing another on-dock rail yard at its Yang-Ming Terminal that costs 19.8 million dollars.

22. NEXT SLIDE Alameda Corridor

In the Los Angeles/Long Beach area, a transportation infrastructure project is underway to improve freight mobility in the 20-mile stretch of the “Alameda Corridor” which extends between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to the central part of Los Angeles The estimated cost is $2 billion.

The FAST Corridor

A project that is similar but smaller scale than the Alameda Corridor, known as the “FAST Corridor”, is also under way, but yet to be funded, in the Seattle/Tacoma area. The plan in Seattle/Tacoma is to separate the grading of rail and highway traffic at critical intersections to improve freight mobility in the region.
