2. NEXT SLIDE WAVE LECTURE
Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen. I am very pleased to be here in your beautiful country (with my wife) at the invitation of WAVE. I would especially like to express my appreciation to Mr.Toshima and his colleagues for making this event possible.
With all the distinguished guests in the audience from ports around the world and who are experts in there own right, I feel like the old Baptist minister preaching to the choir. I know that you are familiar with what I have to say and will also be able to elaborate on many points in my talk.
In my talk. I will narrow my examples to North American West Coast Ports.
3. NEXT SLIDE INTRODUCTION
In introduction, I will cover: Global commerce and the container port challenge; The intermodal transportation system; Logistics and supply chain management: a systems perspective; West Coast Container terminal operations in the USA; and if there is sufficient time I will present a new concept in container terminal design.
4. NEXT SLIDE GLOBAL COMMERCE AND THE CONTAINER PORT CHALLENGE
Global commerce and structural change is impacting many ports and regions around the World. This change in global commerce is reflected in new technologies, new management styles, electronic commerce, JIT (just-in-time) manufacturing, flexible production, the supply chain, global competition, national competitiveness, and port competition.
Over the last several decades, the world has seen tremendous global structural change take place. The emergence of new economies, political boundary changes, new trading blocks and trade organizations, along with advances in communications and computer technologies has been facilitating the growth of world trade at a rapid rate. The merger of these new technologies is taking us into a new era of information technology that is helping to create new trade and transportation patterns.
