(2) Category of accident

Three categories of marine accident were particularly prevalent in 1998. Groundings, which numbered 1,393, accounted for 19.7% of accidents reported. Collisions (single), at 871, represented 12.3% of the total, and collisions, at 772, equaled 10.9% of the total. Distress accidents, at 2,774, were 39.2% of the total (Fig. 2-1-4).

Notes 1: "Distress" refers to accidents that are difficult to classify into a single marine accident category because the causes and patterns of the accident are complex or they not fit into any of the above categories.

Notes 2: "Other" includes obstruction of safety and operation, facility damage, equipment damage, and missing ships.
