・ Commissioner: a commissioner of the Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office (assigned to the Local or High Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office) or assistant commissioner (assigned to the Local Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office)
・ Local Inquiry Agency: a Local Marine Accidents Inquiry Agency (including its branches)
・ Local Commissioner's Office: the Local Marine Accidents Inquiry Commissioner's Office(including its branch offices)
・ Offered case: a case for which an offer for the commencement of inquiry has been made
・ Pendent case: a case that is currently subjected to an inquiry
・ Judged case: a case upon which a judgment has been pronounced
・ Appealed case: a judged case for which an application for the inquiry in the second instance has been submitted
