// In a communicative training environment TRANSPARENCIES provide a useful working medium - as you can appreciate here today; also for Trainees to prepare dialogues.. which, with careful planning and augmented with materials from technical subjects, allows trainees to be guided to an awareness of shipboard operations and seagoing situations; class opportunities can be organised to produce ship to ship, ship to Vessel Traffic Services, to pilot boat, to tug bridge and engine room communication, which can then be exchanged with other groups for correction, evaluation and role play. 100% technical accuracy is not expected in the initial stages, although a worthwhile objective. What matters is Trainees' immersing themselves in shipboard situations, maritime terminology and a genuine 'thinking in English' approach.

NOTE Transparencies trainees use in class can be photocopied for Trainees' retention, then quickly washed and dried ("recycled") I've been using the same ones for the past 10 years!!

TEACHER SUPPORT

Considerable re-thinking is involved in training teachers to work in a communicative, learner - centred environment but really it doesn't take very much in the way of resources.
