The findings are diverse and interesting; it recommends that teachers be provided with "good quality standardised training materials": that "teachers be educated in how to participate in a co-ordinated teaching effort" plus "using existing technology to obtain standardised resources" -accessing the Internet-page 47 also provides an outline of a possible website. Probably the most useful aspect of the Report is the detailed Syllabus for teaching Maritime English given in pages 81-91; Many of these aspects are already included in my own programs and I was pleased to compare the Marcom list with the topics I normally employ.
// One point which stands out clearly is how very difficult it is for teachers of English to adapt and apply their usual 'General English' teaching to a technical English format, especially into the demanding sphere of ships and the vast, complex world of international shipping.
The Report gives details of requests from English teachers for references to 'maritime English' textbooks which indicate the best methodology to use in teaching this subject, but there are very few and some of the earlier ones are no longer in print.
