THE ASSOCIATION OF MARITIME EDUCATION AND TRAINING INSTITUTIONS IN ASIA PACIFIC
Oceans of Wealth
The waters of the vast Indian and Pacific oceans, which wash the shores of many nations in the Asia Pacific region, have the potential to provide enormous wealth.
The unique environments of this magnificent heritage, if fully understood and utilised with care, have the potential to provide inexhaustable food, energy, medicines, minerals, tourism and recreation opportunities for the peoples of the Asia Pacific region.
It will be through greater knowledge that the respect, essential to ensure the responsible management of the use of these oceans of wealth, will be created.
The region's maritime educators are already cooperating to ensure that the educational services are available, for safe and efficient maritime transport and the protection of the marine environment and also for the realisation of this great wealth.
Educators Prepare to Meet the Challenge
Recognising the benefits that a regional network would bring, representatives of 16 maritime education and training institutions in the Asia Pacific region met in Hong Kong in September 1996 to form AMETIAP. Their initiative was strongly supported by the International Maritime Organisation and the Hong Kong Shipowners Association.
Membership has grown rapidly and the number of Associated Members is also increasing. Strong links have been developed with the Asian Shipowners' Forum.
From Vancouver to the Maldives, Vladivostok to Tasmania, maritime educators are developing the links required to meet the rapidly growing need for maritime knowledge.
