Alterations
3 It is now planned to discontinue the EC1 and EC3 Lighted Buoys in December 1999. The ECI and EC3 buoys are special mark buoys (no navigational significance), identifying the centre line of the east/west flow of traffic between the traffic separation schemes "Off Casquets" and "In the Dover Strait and adjacent waters". These schemes are now well established and charted and the buoys are no longer required. Both the EC1 and EC3 Lighted Buoys have designated "Areas to be Avoided" around their assigned positions which can be removed at the end of this year.
4 It is also planned to simultaneously reduce the range of the SANDETTIE Light Vessel to 15 nautical miles. Reduction in the range of light of the SANDETTIE station will enable the current diesel generated automated Light Vessel to be replaced by a solar powered automated Light Vessel, having a modified daymark.
5 Chartlets depicting the main aids to navigation in the English Channel and Dover Strait are at annexes 1 and 2. The EC1, EC3 and SANDETTIE stations have been marked.
Action requested of the Sub-Committee
6 The Sub-Committee is invited to:
.1 note the information provided; and
.2 develop an appropriate SN circular abolishing the Areas to be Avoided around the EC1 and EC3 Lighted Buoys, consequent upon the discontinuance of these two stations.
