Introduction
1 Chengshan Jiao promontory, also called Shandong Gao Jiao promontory, is located at the eastern extremity of Shandong Peninsula of China and penetrating into Huanghai. Its geographical position is 37°23'41"N, 122°42'07"E.
2 The waters off Chengshan Jiao promontory is an important coastal sea lane in northern China. Vessels entering and/or leaving the ports in Bohai and north Huanghai, i.e. ports of Dalian, Yingkou, Qinhuangdao, Tlanjin, Yantai etc. converge and alter course here. The waters Off Chengshan Jiao promontory is also an important coastal fishing ground in northern China. The total number of ships navigating and operating in this area was more than 180,000 in 1998, of which 50,000 were merchant ships (daily average was over 140), and the rest were fishing boats and other ships. At harvest season from April to June and from September to November every year, there are more than six hundred fishing boats working in this area every day.
3 The waters off Chengshan Jiao promontory is prone to frequent fog and strong winds. The foggy season extends from April to August, lasting about 69 days annually. The prevailing winds are from north and northwest. The wind force is 6-7 Beaufort in general, but the strongest can be over 10 Beaufort. The days with strong wind exceeding 8 Beaufort are more than 100 per year.
