1 The Assembly, at its twentieth session, adopted resolution A.867 (20) on Combating unsafe practices associated with the trafficking or transport of migrants by sea and, inter alia, requested the Secretary-General (operative paragraph 7) to submit a report on progress made intersessionally to its twenty-first session. Operative paragraph 6 of resolution A.867 (20) directs the appropriate IMO bodies to consider, as necessary, the issue of the trafficking or transport of migrants by sea from the safety of life at sea viewpoint, as well as the development of a reporting system of such unsafe practices.
2 As directed, the Maritime Safety Committee and the Facilitation Committee considered the issue and took action as outlined in the draft progress report set out at annex.
Action requested of the Committee
3 The Committee is invited to:
.1 consider and approve the draft progress report, as set out at annex; for submission to the twenty-first session of the Assembly, for consideration and action as appropriate;
.2 authorize the Secretariat to:
.1 update the annexed draft report as may be necessary in the light of action the Committee may take at its seventy-first session; and
.2 report directly to the twenty-first session of the Assembly on any further developments in the Ad Hoc Committee of the UN Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, as well as on any relevant action the Facilitation Committee may take at its twenty-seventh session (6 to 10 September 1999).
