Outcome of the Vienna Meeting

SUMMARY
Executive summary: This document reports on the outcome of the First Meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of a Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (Vienna, Austria, 19 to 29 January 1999).

1 As requested by operative paragraph 7 of resolution A.867 (20) on Combating unsafe practices associated with the trafficking or transport of migrants by sea and in accordance with the Committee's instructions (MSC 69/22, paragraph 21.14.4), the Secretariat attended the First Meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of a Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, held in Vienna from 19 to 29 January 1999.
2 The purpose of the Meeting was to continue work on the aforementioned draft Convention and also to consider additional international instruments (i.e. protocols) to the draft convention addressing:
.1 combating illegal trafficking in and transport of migrants (including by sea);
.2 combating illegal trafficking of women and children; and
.3 combating illegal manufacturing of and trafficking in firearms, their parts and components and ammunition.
3 The Meeting was attended by 459 participants and observers in 91 countries; 14 United Nations organizations and 13 inter-governmental and 18 non-governmental organizations.
4 The Secretariat attended the Meeting from 27 to 29 January 1999, when the issue of combating of illegal trafficking and transport of migrants was discussed.
