Forum Narrative Report

Introduction

"The Pacific Rim in the Twenty First Century: The Next Generation" (herein referred to as PacRim)" was held in New Zealand at Victoria University of Wellington from August 26 to 29 and at Auckland University from August 30 to September 1 , 1999.

The forum was organised by the Asian Studies Institute (Victoria University of Wellington) and the New Zealand Asia Institute (Auckland University) with assistance from the New Zealand Centre for Japanese Studies (Massey University).

Background

In September 1999, New Zealand hosted the leaders and representatives of Pacific rim nations at the 11th annual Conference of APEC (the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation forum). The Conference, held in New Zealand's largest city Auckland, was important because of the backdrop of uncertainty brought about by the financial turmoil currently affecting Asia and the world. This meeting would also was also be the last such meeting of APEC before the start of the next millennium.

To coincide with this important event on the eve of the 21 st century, Victoria University of Wellington (the university of New Zealand's capital city) in association with other New Zealand universities planned an international Forum for students and young people. The aim of the Forum was be discuss the prospects for the next century, and the next generation, of APEC and Pacific rim co-operation.

Objectives

The main objectives of the Forum are to bring together exceptional graduate students from the Asia-Pacific community and to promote discussion about practical ways of promoting future regional co-operation among young people in the region. By adopting an open, inclusive format, we hope to encourage participants to come up with a variety of new ideas about future co-operation and networking activities in the Asia-Pacific region.

Forum participants were encouraged to engage in a wide range of critical and creative discussions, focusing partly on some of the stated aims of APEC. These included APEC's aim of promoting a regional educational network, EduNet, and its call to involve more young people in co-operation on APEC-related activities.

The five main themes of the forum were:

- The internationalisation of education

- Harnessing technology for the future

- Promoting sustainable growth

- Fostering safe and efficient capital markets

- Indigenous peoples rights
