8. Radar Reflector required on Small ships
In existing SOLAS regulation on the carriage requirement of radar reflector is that ships less than 100 gross tonnage shall have a radar reflector of which radar cross section is 10m2. But in the draft of new SOLAS (NAV 45/5), paragraph 1.2.7 of Regulation 20 is as follows;
1.2.7 if the ship's minimum radar cross section is less than [100m2] a radar reflector, or other means to ensure that they are detectable by ships navigating by radar;
On this mater, CIRM submit the document NAV 45/5/6, and the document was discussed at plenary. And this paragraph was amended as follows;
1.2.7 if less than 150 gross tonnage and if practicable, a radar reflector, or other means to enable detection by ships navigating by radar at either 9 or 3 GHz;
Relevant ISO Standard (ISO 8729) will be revised later on.
9. Magnetic Compass and its adjustment
In the draft of new SOLAS regulation on the carriage requirement of a magnetic compass is as follows;
1.2.1 a [properly adjusted] magnetic compass, or other means independent of any power supply to determine the ship's heading and display the reading at the main steering position;
On this matter, CIRM submit the document NAV 45/5/3, and the document was discussed at plenary. And this paragraph was amended as follows;
1.2.1 a properly adjusted magnetic compass, or other means independent of any power supply to determine the ship's heading and display the reading at the main steering position;
The proposal for the preparation of a SN/Circular on Guidance on adjustment of magnetic compasses was deferred to a later stage.
Relevant ISO Standards (ISO 694) will be revised later on.
10. Tentative Schedule of next IMO/NAV 46 Sub-Committee
The Sub-Committee noted that its forty-sixth session had been tentatively scheduled to take place from 10 to 14 July 2000.
