For your information, the draft work programme of DG VII for 1999 provides for a Commission decision to request the European Standardisation Organisations to establish testing standards for the equipment listed in Annex A.2.
I would therefore urge you to take the above duly into account for the elaboration of the CEN/TC 300 Business Plan and in particular for its Work Programme, which I understand is scheduled to cover the period until December 2003.
I enclose for your perusal copy of the recently adopted Commission Directive 98/85/EC amending Council Directive 96/98/EC. You will note that considerable changes to its Annexes A.1 and A.2 have been introduced, including the transfer of some items of equipment from Annex A.2 into Annex A.1.
In view of the envisaged Commission decision on the one hand and the planning of the CEN/TC 300 Work Programme on the other, I am of the opinion that it will be indispensable to carefully assess the amended Annex A.2, in order to identify the equipment for which the development of European standards might become necessary, taking duly into account the work that might be ongoing in the international organisations. I appreciate that such an assessment will have to be made in close cooperation between your and my services, and I recommend that you contact Mr. Renders for this purpose.
