1.1. Ultrasonographic (US) Studies
Since ultrasonographic examinations were found to be very useful diagnostic tools in schistosomiasis on not only S. haematobium and S.mansoni but S. japonicum which is widely spread in the Philippines. We brought the ultrasonographic equipment (Fukuda denshi UF-4000) with a convex type of probe (FUT-C111A 3.5MHz 60R) and a video graphic printer (Sony UP-890MD) that belong to the Department of Medical Zoology, Dokkyo University School of Medicine, from Japan to the respective fields in Victoria, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines.
We aim at (1) analysing the changes of US images in each case in the past few years, (2) examining changes of US images after praziquantal treatment, and (3) comparing changes of US images before and after reinfection.
We were able to conduct ultrasonographic examinations in four barangays Malabo, Poblacion II, San Narciso, San Pedro) in the municipality of Victoria, Oriental Mindoro and to examine the total of 105 school children in Malabo Elementary School and 240 persons mostly who reside in the said barangays. We were able to find numerous number of untreated schistosomiasis patients on the certain stages of Ohmae' classification that is widely used in shistosomiasis japonica. Those untreated patients were endorsed to the team leader of SCT (Schitosomiasis Control Team) to be treated as soon as possible.
