2 Outcome of the Research

2.1 The share of Japanese 2 stroke main engines in the world is about 50%, and the share of Japanese 4 stroke main engines is about 10%. With regard to Japanese engines, 100% of the 2 stroke engine type will comply with the NOx requirements, and about 85% of the 4 stroke engine type will comply with the requirements. About 90% of the 4 stroke engine type for generators will comply with the requirements (refer to the attachment). Japan has carried out research on domestic engines only this time, however, it can be assumed that the situation should be similar in other countries, considering technology standards in other countries and the fact that most of such engines, especially all types of 2 stroke engine, are manufactured based on the same licences worldwide.

2.2 Moreover, according to Japanese engine manufacturers, there will be no significant difference between the engines which comply with the NOx requirements and the ones which do not, in terms of the price and running costs because only a minor change in the engine design, such as adjustment of injection timing, is required to make the engines comply with the NOx requirements.

3 Proposal for early entry into force

3.1 Considering the outcome of the research, it is considered that it would not be difficult to install the engines which comply with the NOx requirements worldwide.

3.2 Japan would like to urge member countries to promote installation of engines which comply with the NOx requirements, for the purpose of early entry into force of the 1997 Protocol.

4 Action requested of the Committee

4.1 The Committee is invited to consider the above information and take action as appropriate for the purpose of early entry into force of the 1997 Protocol.
