AMENDMENTS TO THE TECHNICAL CODE ON CONTROL OF EMISSION OF NITROGEN OXIDES FROM MARINE DIESEL ENGINES
The MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION COMMITTEE,
RECALLING Article 38(a) of the Convention on the International Maritime Organization concerning the function of the committee,
NOTING THAT 1997 MARPOL Conference adopted the Protocol 1997 to add new chapter VI to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the Protocol of 1978,
NOTING FURTHER that the Conference also adopted Technical Code on Control of Emission of Nitrogen Oxides from Marine Diesel Engines,
NOTING IN PARTICULAR when the 1997 Protocol enters into force, the requirements of the NOx emission restriction applies to each diesel engine with a power output of more than 130 kW which is installed on a ship constructed on or after 1 January 2000, or which undergoes a major conversion on or after 1 January 2000,
RECOGNISING that the necessity for amendments to NOx Technical Code on test condition parameter "fa" for engine family approval,
HAVING CONSIDERED the draft text of amendments to 5.2.1 of the Code to allow extension of "fa" factor as a criterion of test validity of large engine family approval,
1. ADOPTS the amendments to the Code, the text of which is set out in the Annex to present resolution which will become mandatory after the date of entry into force of Annex VI to MARPOL 73/78,
2. INVITES the Governments concerned to ensure that the amended Code is implemented at the date of entry into force of ANNEX VI.
