HIGH-SPEED PASSENGER & CAR FERRY
UNICORN High-Speed Mono-Hull Type Passenger & Car Ferry
The first Mitsubishi 101m high speed mono-hull UNI CORN attained a maximum speed of 42.4 knots.
The UNICORN was delivered on May 29, 1997, at the Shimonoseki Shipyard and Machinery Works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) for Higashi Nihon Ferry Co., Ltd.
The UNICORN entered service in June on the 115km route between Hakodate and Aomori with a crossing time of two hours as the fastest passenger and car ferry in Japan.
The ship is the first high speed mono-hull type passenger and car ferry in Japan. It was developed originally by MHI to meet the high level requirements of domestic operators, and takes full advantage of MHI's engineering and shipbuilding technologies of conventional passenger and car ferries, as well as the know-how obtained by the Techno-Super Liner R & D project.
