3-4 HIGH EFFICIENCY
A longer piston stroke brings about a better form of combustion chamber than the current engine models and with the ideal form of combustion chamber and high injection pressure, the new engines can also attain the technology for both low fuel consumption and heavy fuel oil combustion.
3-5 COMPACTNESS AND WEIGHT REDUCTION
Increasing POWER FACTOR( = Mean effective press. x Piston speed) can reduce weight per power, bringing in effective use of space in the engine room.
4. PROCESS FOR DEVELOPMENT
Development work proceeds as shown in Fig. The process chiefly consists of making best use of design/ development know-how for DL series engines as well as computer analysis on combustion, performance, and mechanical strength under high thermal load.
Stress level on the components is measured with test instruments and devices. Reliability is also confirmed through bench tests.
In parallel with these measurements, a single cylinder engine has been developed to carry out tests matching the combustion system together with open/close timing for in-take/exhaust valves. At the same time, if thermal load
