The Intermediate Circulation as Observed by RAFOS floats

Olaf Boebel

University of Cape Town

An overview of past and present RAFOS float projects dedicated to the observation of the circulation at intermediate depth (around 1000m) is given. Historic and contemporary studies in the North and South Atlantic, the South Pacific, as well as recent experiments in the North Pacific Ocean are covered. Results from Lagrangian studies in the western South Atlantic, obtained under the auspices of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment are given, focusing on the flow patterns of Antarctic Intermediate Water along the South American shelf. First trajectories from an ongoing experiment (KAPEX) that focuses on the interocean exchange at intermediate depth in the vicinity of the South African subcontinent are presented. The applicability of similar Lagrangian methods, with respect to the flow of the Kuroshio Current and its extension at mid-depth, are examined, and the design of a possible RAFOS float project as part of the Triangle project is discussed.
