1. PURPOSE OF THE MEETlNG

JAMSTEC intends to hopefully make a significant contribution towards our deeper understanding of that role, utilizing its facilities as R/V Mirai, TRITON buoys, and acoustic tomography systems. We term the observation program as the Triangle Program from the geographical point of view. This will be done through active international collaboration and close tie-up with the Frontier Research System for Global Change (FRSGC).
As a part of the international collaboration, JAMSTEC hosts an international symposium as indicated below. The purpose of this symposium is to :
・ Make an assessment of our current knowledge about the coupled ocean-atmosphere system in the Pacific and Indian Oceans, ranging from seasonal to interdecadal time scales.
・ Identify major uncertainties that still exist in our knowledge of the coupled system, particularly of the role of ocean circulation.
・ Suggest process-oriented field experiments and monitoring, as well as modeling and diagnostic and empirical studies, which will lead to reducing the uncertainties in the basic physics that underpin ocean circulation and ocean-atmosphere coupled system.
