Weather Observation

The weather station which JAMSTEC used is the Andderra weather station in combined with an Argos Transmitter. The tide gauge was an Andderra water level meter to measure a tide and water temperature JAMSTEC has resumed the weather observation in April 1993. Unfortunately, in October of 1994 a few strong typhoons attacked Oki-no-Tori Sima and damaged all of the sensors. The observation was interrupted. In March 1995, all damaged sensors were replaced by the new ones. At the end of October 1995, a battery trouble occurred and stopped the observation promptly. In February of the next year, all sensors and components were replaced by new ones. After that, the observation resumed properly. The weather station was well maintained and all of the sensors were replaced by new ones in February or March every year.

Sea and Air Temperatures

Time series of the air and sea temperatures at Oki-no-Tori Sima clearly showed a characteristic change in winter and early spring as shown in Figure 2. There existed a special day. when the winter fluctuation of the air temperature suddenly ceased and the air temperature shified to an steady warming stage. The sea temperature changed in accordance with the change of the air temperature. But amplitude of the sea temperature was only one third of the air temperature. This showed that the air temperature was more sensitive to the large-scale changes.
