4. Correlation Coefficients between the Throughflow and the Dynamic Height Field
Potemra et al. (1997) demonstrated that the sea surface height in specific locations around the Indonesian archipelago could be used to monitor the throughflow transport. To see if this is also true in the present model and to check the processes regulating the transport, the correlation coefficients between the throughflow transport and the surface dynamic height relative to 800 db at each model grid point are calculated. Figure 4 shows the distribution of the coefficients for the interannual anomalies in IR case. There are regions of high positive correlations off southeast of Mindanao Island in the western equatorial Pacific Ocean and near the northwestern coast of Australia. The large negative correlations less than -0.5 appears in the eastern Indian Ocean near 100。?, and the region of the negative correlation extends into the Indonesian archipelago.
