Figure 1. Schematic of the current pattern between Mindanao and New Guinea after Fine et al., [1994]. Thick solid lines denote surface - subsurface flow, i.e., the Mindanao Current (MC), North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC), New Guinea Coastal Current (NGCC) with the Mindanao Eddy (ME) and Halmahera Eddy (HE). Thin solid lines indicate flow below the subsurface-intermediate layer, Mindanao Undercurrent (MUC) and New Guinea Coastal Undercurrent (NGCUC). Regarding the NGCC, the current in boreal summer is shown. Solid triangles denote the mooring sites.

Figure 2. Time series of recording current meter (RCM) velocity, RCM and moored conductivity-temperature-depth profiler (CTD) temperature, salinity and pressure at a) northern and b) southern sites though 48-hour tide killer filter. Solid, broken and broken-dotted lines in temperature and salinity time series denote those from the CTD (260m depth), RCM-350 (350m depth) and RCM-550 (550m depth), respectively. Pressure time series is that from the CTD.

Figure 3. Depth - time plots for a) velocity from the RCM-350m and RCM-550m, and b) salinity from the CTD, RCM-350m and RCM-550m at the southern site from November 1994 to March 1995. Thin broken lines denote tracks of the moored instruments. Thick contours in Figure 3b are every 0.1 PSU. Salinity lower than 34.5 PSU is hatched.

Figure 4. Salinity sections along 130°E during June 1996. Salinity lower than 34.5 PSU is hatched. Sigma-theta contours of 25.0 and 26.5 are denoted by broken lines. Contour interval is 0.1 PSU.

Figure 5. Current measured by the shipboard ADCP at 350m depths during July 1995 and June 1996.

Figure 6. Mean current patterns during a) boreal winter (from January to March) and b) summer (from July to September) at 50m depth derived from JEGCM.

Plate 1. Current vectors with salinity map at 100m depth at a) February 15, b) February 25, c) March 7, d) March 17, e) March 27, and f) April 6 in 18 model years.
