Fig. 4 A notional Acoustic Thermometry and Autonomous Mooring (ATAM) network with six ATAM receive moorings and 3 autonomous source moorings. All six of the ATAM receive moorings are cabled to shore via deep sea trunk cable and terminate in either Barrow, Alaska, or Alert, Canada. While this network is for illustrative purposes only (detailed analysis and calculations would be required to determine the best locations for sources and receivers), it shows that an 18 acoustic path system will sample every major Arctic Ocean basin and intersect every major Arctic Ocean current and frontal structure. The acoustic signal takes 30 minutes to propagate along the longest path from Franz Josef Land to the Beaufort Sea array.
