PREFACE
An International Symposium on Acoustic Tomography and Acoustic Thermometry was held from February 8 through 10, 1999 in Tokyo. This built on the successful Acoustic Tomography Workshop held at the Japan Marine Science and Technology Center (JAMSTEC), Yokosuka, in March 1997.
The Symposium provided an opportunity to focus on several themes:
1. Progress in acoustic tomography (observations, techniques, modeling)
2. Results of Acoustic Thermometry of Ocean Climate in the Pacific
3. Application of acoustic tomography and thermometry to other ocean basins
4. Linking ocean acoustic data with general circulation (and other) models
5. Developments in acoustic sources, simple receivers, signal processing
Thirty three speakers presented papers on a topics related to these themes and on associated aspects of ocean acoustics and physical oceanography.
In conjunction with the Tokyo Symposium, the meeting of SCOR Affiliated Group on Acoustic Monitoring of the Global Ocean was held at JAMSTEC on February 10. The meeting had a fruitful discussion on progressing plans for proliferating acoustic thermometry, particularly in the Indian Ocean and acoustic tomography.
We believe this symposium gave all participants an excellent opportunity to hear about current projects and plans for imminent and future research on acoustic tomography and acoustic thermometry.
Finally, we would like to address special thanks to JAMSTEC and the Nippon Foundation for generously providing travel funding to the invited speakers.
Sincerely yours,
