ANNEX
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR NIGHT VISION ENHANCEMENT
EQUIPMENT FOR HIGH SPEED CRAFT
1 SCOPE
At night, night vision enhancement equipment (NVEE) on board high speed craft (HSC) facilitates the detection of other vessels, offshore structures, obstructions to shipping, floating objects and living things, as well as shorelines, fixed and floating sea marks and other aids to navigation, above the water surface, thus providing essential information to the navigator for safe navigation and collision avoidance.
2 APPLICATION
These performance standards should be applied to night vision enhancement equipment, which is required for HSC pursuant to chapter 13, paragraph 13.10 of the International Code of Safety for High Speed Craft (HSC Code, resolution MSC.36(63)).
3 REFERENCES
The following standards should be additionally applied, as appropriate:
.1 resolution A.694(17) "General requirements for shipborne radio equipment forming part of the global maritime distress and information system (GMDSS) and for electronic navigational aids";
.2 resolution A. 813(19) "General requirements for electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) for all electrical and electronic ship's equipment";
.3 IEC 945 "Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems- general requirements, methods of testing and required test results"; and
.4 IEC 1162 "Maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems-digital interfaces";
4 DEFINITIONS
"Night vision enhancement equipment" (NVEE) means any technical means enabling the position and aspect of objects above the water surface relative to one's own craft to be detected at night.
"High speed craft" (HSC) means any craft to which the definition in chapter 1 of the HSC Code applies.
"Standard test target" means a target, or targets, that simulate the real hazards of surface objects that can be found in the marine environment, such as other vessels, floating debris, timber, buoys, navigational marks, shorelines, sea animals, ice, etc.
