5. Chairman's report and opening address

The task of developing standards within the field of computer application is, and must be, a question of co-operation within the community of standardization. The chairman underlined the importance of co-operation in order to avoid duplication of work, particularly in view of the scarcity of International expertise in this specialized field of activity.

The chairman of ISO/TC 8 Capt. Charles H. Piersall was invited to the meeting. In particular he was invited to inform about how IMO requirements are allocated to TC 8 and later linked to the TC 8 Subcommittees.

Capt. Piersall; "The ISO/TC 8 plan is to be a world-wide body that is a linking instrument between the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which set the requirements and regulations, and the International shipping and shipbuilding industry. One part of the overall strategy of TC 8 is to strengthen the ties with IMO to ensure that regulatory desires are met in international voluntary standards.

Several work items are regarded to be of mutual interest to ISO/TC 8 and IMO. These items are either requested by IMO or are initiated by TC 8 itself. As an overview of IMO links and corresponding TC 8 work items, a "living" comprehensive document- TC 8 N 1000, is regularly updated by the TC 8 secretariat based on information collected from the Subcommittees and Working Groups.

These items should be included in the TC8/Subcommittees work programme when it can be determined that related International Standards will be useful for the industry.

ISO (TC 8) has been granted consultative status as observer by IMO to participate in the work of its committees and subcommittees. Through correspondence and frequent meetings, ISO/TC 8 leadership is assessing the progress on these items to insure timely and technically correct responses to IMO related items. It is the intention of TC 8 to maintain, and even increase, a positive collaboration with IMO in the future.

TC 8 shall during the Maldon meeting set up an Ad Hoc Group mandated to investigate and clarify the origin and possible reference documents to all items that are supposed to be requested or required by IMO".

6. Report of the secretariat

The secretary introduced the agenda SC10/N 32 and attached documents.

At present 14 nations are P-members and 10 nations are O-members of ISO/TC 8/SC 10. Since last meeting (No. 1) Portugal has changed membership status from O to P-member.

The report SC 10/N 33 was accepted without remarks. No particular resolution was taken.

7. SC 10 program of work

7.1 Report of WG 1 Fleet management network

The convener of WG 1 reported the progress of work as described in document SC 10/N 37.

Voting's and comments received up to now has in some cases been based on the assumption that the work item covered control systems. It should now be clear to everybody involved that the work item do not cover control systems but only shipboard administrative systems.
